Archway Gallery’s first annual juried exhibition, “Natural Habitat”, which explores the theme of celebration of flora and fauna and the preservation of nature, will open July 5 and continue through July 30. Exhibit pieces will be available for sale with forty percent of the proceeds benefiting the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center.

An Artists’ Reception on Saturday, July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. will include presentation of awards and remarks from show juror and Houston sculptor Dean Ruck at 6:30 p.m.

A special Preview Reception for Arboretum members and supporters will be Friday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Ruck’s prominent projects have been located at Art League of Houston (Inversion with Dan Havel); Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery in Houston; Neuberger Museum at Purchase College, NY; City Gallery of Atlanta; Houston’s Sesquicentennial Park; and most recently a project for Estudio Abierto in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ruck’s work was featured in the book Designing the World’s Best Public Art, by Garrison Roots/Images Publishing Group. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Cranbrook Academy of Art and numerous private collections.

Archway Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

Archway Gallery
From its inception in 1976, Archway Gallery has been home to many of Houston’s most dynamic and collectable artists.   As the area’s longest-running artists-owned gallery, Archway features the work of local and regional painters, printmakers, sculptors, fiber artists and ceramists.  Monthly openings featuring resident and guest artists allow patrons and clients to browse a frequently-changed mix of fine art and craft. One or more of the gallery’s resident artists is on hand each day. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, a lush 155-acre nature preserve, is one of the city’s greatest natural treasures.  Located in Memorial Park, at 4501 Woodway Drive, the Arboretum is home to more than 75 varieties of native trees, 160 species of birds, 16 species of turtles, 10 species of frogs and 33 kinds of butterflies.  Visitors can explore and enjoy five miles of walking trails to experience nature at its most dramatic and in exquisite detail. The Arboretum grounds are open to the public daily, except major holidays, from dawn to dusk.

The Nature Center building is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Discovery Room is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and provides fun, hands-on activities and exhibits to explore nature up close.  Admission is free, but donations to support this nonprofit organization are appreciated. JUROR: Dean Ruck
Originally from Hamden, CT, Dean Ruck received a BFA from the University of Colorado (1984) and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art (1987) before relocating to Houston to be Core Artist-in-Residence at the Glassell School of Art in 1987. He has created distinctive and ambitious objects and installations across Texas and the U.S, and internationally, including a recent project for Estudio Abierto in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Other prominent projects have been located at Art League of Houston (Inversion with Dan Havel); Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery in Houston; Neuberger Museum at Purchase College, NY; City Gallery of Atlanta; Old Jail Art Center, Albany, TX; Indianapolis Arts Center; Houston’s Sesquicentennial Park, Connemara Conservancy in Plano, TX. Dean Ruck has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, Houston International Festival, Connemara Conservancy and Cranbrook Academy of Art. His work has been reviewed in numerous media outlets such as the New Art Examiner, Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, Texas Architecture, CITE Magazine, Gulf Coast, Artlies, the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Clarin (Argentina), and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, CNN and USA Today. Most notably, Ruck’s work was featured in the book Designing the World’s Best Public Art, by Garrison Roots/Images Publishing Group. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and numerous private collections. Dean Ruck is a recipient of a 2006 Individual Artist Grant from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Avenue Community Development Corporation.

AWARDS
Best of Show will receive a cash award of $500.00, and guest artist privileges for one month at Archway Gallery, dates to be mutually agreed between the artist and gallery. Cash awards will be presented to the first and second award winning artists. Additional cash and merchandise awards will be announced.
