Backyard Birds

This introductory class will acquaint the student with the common birds around the Houston area. We will highlight the habitats where birds are found, how the changing seasons affect the types of birds that are present, techniques to identify all common species, including by call, and ways to attract birds to your yard.

This class is open to anyone over the age of 10, and family participation is encouraged. The class will also include a half-day birdwalk at the Arboretum to practice identification skills.

The course consists of two evening classes at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center and one Saturday morning bird walk at the Arboretum.

Course Instructor: Bill Eley is Program Development Director at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center and has over 30 years of experience birding the Gulf Coast, Mexico, and South America. He received his B.A. in Anthropology and his M.S. in Zoology from Louisiana State University, where he participated in four separate scientific expeditions to Peru with the Museum of Natural Science.
