Girl Scouts
Bring your Girl Scout group to the Nature Center for exciting, hands-on Try-Its, Mini-badge workshops or Interest Projects. All programs are conducted by staff naturalists and use the 155-acre nature sanctuary as our field laboratory.
- Scheduling: Scout programs are scheduled on demand, from September through May. Latest appointment on Tuesday or Friday is 2:30 p.m.
- Chaperones: One adult for every 10 scouts is required. Two chaperones are included in the
cost of Mini-badge workshop. Any additional adults or children will pay $10 each.
- Registration: To schedule a program for your scout group, fill out our online form.
- Date changes will incur a $25 fee.
- Payment: Full payment of program fees is required to reserve your date.

DAISIES
BROWNIES - Try-Its:
- Eco-Explorer - "Eco" is short for ecology. Ecology is the study of plants and animals in their environment. Learn how plants and animals always need each other.
This program meets scouting requirements:
- 2 - "What's a Habitat"
- 4 - "Food Chain"
- 6 - "Helping Wildlife"
Time: 1.5 hour program Cost: $10 per scout, with $100 minimum.
- Water Everywhere - Earth is known as the "water planet". Find out about water and how it affects life on earth. Scouts must complete 4 of 6 requirements to earn this Try-It.
This program meets scouting requirements:
- 1 - "Made of Water" (handout completed on their own)
- 3 - "Be a Water Saver" (Scouts will need to finish this on their own)
- 4 - "Water Snooper"
- 5 - "Water Explorer"
Time: 1.5 hour program Cost: $10 per scout, with $100 minimum.
- Animals - The animal kingdom is made up of many different creatures. Learn how they look, move and communicate. Scouts must complete 4 of 6 requirements to earn this Try-It.
This program meets scouting requirements:
- 2 - "Understanding Animals"
- 3 - "Creature Moves"
- 4 - "Looks Mean Something"
- 5 - "Sounds Charades"
Time: 1.5 hour program Cost: $10 per scout, with $100 minimum
JUNIOR GIRL SCOUTS - Mini Badge Workshops:

Earth Connections Badge - Find out how to identify 10 local trees by their leaves, and study tree rings to discover the amazing lives of trees! Learn how plants and animals depend on each other by playing a fun and active game.
Time: 1.5 hour program (Meets Scouting requirements: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8)

Your Outdoor Surroundings Badge - From your naturalist guide learn about their outdoor career. Classify, describe, and compare natural objects along a hike. Gain an awareness of the natural world inside the city of Houston.
Time: 1.5 hour program (Meets Scouting requirements: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9)
- Wildlife Badge - Learn fascinating facts about wildlife in this area - their adaptations, the relationships between different animals, how to observe animals, and why some animals are threatened.
Time: 1.5 hour program (Meets Scouting requirements: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8)
- Cost: $10 per scout, with $100 minimum.
CADETTE & SENIOR GIRL SCOUTS - Interest Projects
Wildlife - Investigate an Arboretum pond to identify plants and animals. Look for animal signs and document your discoveries. Learn about basic pond chemistry and test for dissolved oxygen and pH.
Time: 2 hour program (Meets Scouting requirements: Skill Builders: 1, 2: Technology: 1; Service Project: 3; Career Exploration: 4)
- All About Birds - Build your knowledge and understanding of bird anatomy & identification, migratory patterns, and more. Learn how to use binoculars and what birds to look for in our area.
Time: 1.5 hour program (Meets Scouting requirements: Skill Builders: 1,2,3: Technology: 1, 5; Service Project: 3; Career Exploration: 4)
- Build Your Own Interest Project - Girl Scouts will have the opportunity to design their own nature interest project and gain a foundation for completion of that project here at the Arboretum.
- Cost: $10 per scout, with $100 minimum.
