Landscaping for Birds and Butterflies
Interest in landscaping to attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife is growing rapidly. Landscaping with native plants helps foster an environment or habitat where birds and butterflies can live. Native plants thrive in their own unique habitat, therefore maintenance is reduced; chemical fertilizers and pesticides are generally not needed and significantly less watering is required.
In this course, learn the principles necessary to create an oasis for birds and butterflies and a retreat for yourself and family in our increasingly urbanized world. Landscaping with native plants, not only provides habitat for wildlife, but it also creates a more interesting healthier environment for people.
In this course we will discuss the basic principles of:
- Soil types
- Landscape design
- Appropriate plant selection for the upper Texas Coast
- Plant diversity and placement of plants
- Specific plants that attract birds and butterflies
- Water features
- Being a good neighbor and gardener
- How to Certify your garden as Wildlife Habitat
