3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Party Animals - Hounds & Hula
Get ready for Party Animals, a new dog-friendly social mixer event at the Arboretum for adults. Wear your Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, flip flops and shades for a howling good time. Dogs on leashes and their owners are invited to join other nature and canine lovers for refreshments and Hawaiian music in the meadow to salute summertime, weather permitting. Receive a doggie bag with a treat for your favorite canine.Cost is $8 for members, $10 for non-members.

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Arboretum Bayou Cleanup Day
Volunteers are needed for this first annual clean up of trash accumulation along the Arboretum’s banks to Buffalo Bayou. The work will include use of boats to clean along the banks of the bayou as well as volunteers to carry out, measure and weigh the trash that is collected. Volunteers must register by Wednesday, May 7. No one under age 18 will be allowed in boat. Groups interested in volunteering should contact Lori Hutson, Volunteer Director at 713-366-0375.

Adult class designed to teach the basic biology of woody plants, study pruning practices and explore current and historical myths and philosophies related to tree care. A Saturday outdoor session will include discussion on better tree/urban forest management practices with proper tree selection, planting techniques and maintenance practices. Instructor: Phil Coker, ISA Certified Arborist
Cost is $75 for members, $95 for non-members. Pre-registration required. Class includes 2 evening sessions, May 14 & 16 and outdoor session on May 17.

Accompanied by a big person of their choice, Tadpole Troopers discover fun nature facts. Discover how each animal has its own unique set of wings, compare the differences then make a set of wings to flutter through the Arboretum forest. Cost is $12 for members, $24 for non-members. Pre-registration is required.

1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Buffalo Bayou Canoe Trip
Spend the afternoon in a canoe on Buffalo Bayou and explore its natural history. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, includes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The trip will be preceded by a mandatory orientation at the Arboretum on Thursday evening, April 17. This outdoor class is one in a series of trips sponsored by the Arboretum and Whitewater Experience founder Don Greene. While canoeing experience is not necessary, a desire to learn definitely is.
