Art After School - Portrait of a Tree: Drawing
In partnership with City ArtWorks, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center will present a 6-week "Art After School" program for children in grades 1-5. All art projects will be inspired by nature as students experiment with a variety of art materials and techniques. Sign up your child to explore the creative world of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and more. Cost is $10 per child.

Artistic Side of Macro Photography

The Artistic Side of Macro Photography
Class will showcase techniques that David Vu uses to create his stunning nature macro photographs. David's art emphasizes composition, detail and color, capturing the innate beauty of our natural world. The class will include some introductory material for those who are new to photography.
Instructor: David Vu is a local photographer who loves doing wildlife and nature photography in his spare time. He especially enjoys doing macro photography of pollinator plants and insects, and creating works of art from these photographs.
Cost: $80 for members; $110 for non-members

Family Creative Yoga and Movement
This fun and upbeat class allows kids to explore their creative abilities through dance, yoga, improvisation, rhythm instruments and much more. Class will be each Wednesday through Dec. 16 and is open to ages 5 to 12. If a parent wishes to attend, they are welcome. Children younger than 5 yrs. may participate with a parent. Cost is $10 per student per class.

Why fight the traffic? Slow down and relax in the peaceful beauty of the Arboretum during a one-hour yoga session in the Arboretum's classroom overlooking the forest.
Cost is $10 per session when registering for a month or $15 per session.

Basic Wilderness Life Support

Basic Wilderness Life Support
Basic Wilderness Life Support® certification is a one-day, fast-paced, hands-on course providing preparation for the prevention and management of real emergencies that can occur in the wild (or even in your backyard). The course covers a wide range of outdoor and back-country topics and will teach participants to assess and handle medical situations with limited resources. The course time will be divided between lectures and hands-on practice. Basic Wilderness Life Support (BWLS) was created for all outdoor enthusiasts including scout leaders, hikers, bikers, skiers, climbers, kayakers, hunters, fishermen and trail runners. Participants will receive a textbook, field guide and upon completion, a BWLS certificate.
Instructors: Drs. Jane Corboy and John Rogers are certified in family medicine, sports medicine and advanced wilderness life support. They have extensive experience in mountaineering, whitewater rafting and backpacking, and are award-winning teachers. Cost is $100 for members and medical students; $120 for non-members.

Backyard Habitat Builder

Backyard Habitat Builder Series: Building Winter Shelters for Wildlife
Backyard Habitat Builder Series includes monthly half-day classes taught by Arboretum Conservation Director Joe Blanton, where participants will learn about and create habitat components for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The majority of each class will be spent outside as students gain practical experience through a hands-on project completed on the Arboretum grounds. Most classes include take-home items assembled in class. In November’s class, “Building Winter Shelters for Wildlife” students will learn to create amphibian houses and brush pile "hotels". Cost for each class is $60 for members or $80 for non-members.

Learn how to get back and give back to nature as a volunteer at the Arboretum. Weekday and weekend opportunities are available. Please register to attend by calling 713-366-0375.

Nature 101 classes are introductory natural history courses designed to introduce participants to the animals and plants found at the Nature Center. It’s also an opportunity for teachers to earn 2 hours of SBEC credit and for Texas Master Naturalists to earn Advanced Training. Cost is $25. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.
1:00 -3:00 p.m. Nature 101: Invertebrates
They have no backbone and tiny brains, but these organisms dominate the world. Learn about the real rulers of the animal kingdom - invertebrates. Nature 101 classes are introductory natural history courses designed to introduce participants to the animals and plants found at the Nature Center. It’s also an opportunity for teachers to earn 2 hours of SBEC credit and for Texas Master Naturalists to earn Advanced Training. Cost is $25. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Edible Wild Plants
Learn where to find, how to identify, and how to properly prepare the fruits, shoots, roots and salad greens growing all around you. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and a snack. Instructor Mark Vorderbruggen, is a research chemist and also one of the Houston area's most intrepid explorers. Cost: $40 for members; $60 for non-members.

Home School Class: Bird Talk
Designed especially for home schoolers, this class will explore some of the ways birds communicate through songs, calls and displays. Cost is $15 for members; $25 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by the Wednesday prior to class.

7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Wine & Cheese Owl Prowl
Venture out on the trails with an Arboretum naturalist for a night hike to listen and look for owls, flying squirrels, and other animals in the forest. Afterward, relax with a selection of wines and cheeses. Wear walking shoes and dress for the weather - the event will be held rain or shine. Cost is $22 for members; $32 for non-members. Ages 21 and up only.

This fall, Naturalist Explorer classes will study mammals found in Houston. In November, students will learn about opossums, the only American marsupial. Cost: $15 for members; $30 for non-members. Pre-registration required by noon on Friday prior to class.

EcoTrackers: Awesome Opossums
EcoTracker classes inspire young naturalists with hands-on, engaging activities about a nature topic each month. November’s class will study opossums, the only marsupial in America. Cost: $15 for members, $30 for non-members. Pre-registration required by noon on Friday prior to class.

Almost one-fourth of the Earth’s land is grassland. Learn about the plants and animals that exist in this disappearing ecosystem.
