Summer Is Upon Us

365 edited 1 200x300 Summer Is Upon UsThere’s just something about this time of year. The birds are chirping, and the thermometer is reading a scorching 100 degrees! That iridescent feeling that memories just need to be made can only mean one thing: summer is finally in full force for us Houstonians, and the Arboretum’s Summer Nature Camp is back in session.

Our camp, which is offered from the first week of June through August, is established on the attitude that no one can be expected to care about and save the natural world if they don’t know about and understand it. Here at the Houston Arboretum we do our best to foster a genuine appreciation and love of nature by inviting campers into our home each week to explore the world around them through hands-on, outdoor, experiential learning. In doing so, the hope is to inspire the youth of today to become environmentally responsible and aware citizens of tomorrow.

Nature, teamwork, exploration, imagination, and fun are the staples of our Summer Nature Camp! Various indigenous plants and animals are highlighted throughout the Arboretum’s grounds. We invite students of all ages to bring their magnifying glasses in hand as we hone in on our naturalist skills by examining the native foliage and critters that call our plantation of trees home. Although we are still overcoming the obstacles of last year’s drought, our blossoming meadow is in full bloom providing a lush oasis surrounding our pond. Campers have been taking advantage of the long summer days through a variety of activities like adventure hikes, kayaking, and pond dipping! 296 edited 1 with border 300x207 Summer Is Upon Us

Kids who are ‘naturally’ artistic may prefer our Summer Art Camp. Creativity shines through as we paint, draw, and sculpt crafts reflecting all of the new knowledge we accumulate throughout the day about our environment. We believe that to spark a lifelong love of learning helps forge a deep and unshakable connection with the natural world that is truly beneficial to our planet and our hearts. It’s only just begun, and we can’t wait to see the inventiveness and imagination that shines through!
