
Volunteer Opportunities - Protecting the Arboretum
Due to the extreme drought conditions, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center has been asked by the Houston Fire Department to:
- remove all dead leaves, twigs and plants within 100 ft of the Arboretum building
- remove all dead leaves, twigs and plants within 100 ft of both sides of the driveway leading into the Arboretum and from all edges of the parking lot
Volunteers are needed to help with this important task. All tools and gloves will be provided.
Work will be on:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon
- Upcoming Saturdays: October 1, 8, and 15 from 8 a.m. to noon.
For everyone's safety, we require all volunteers to abide by the following rules:
- Volunteers are required to wear sturdy, closed toe, closed-heel shoes (preferably leather or other thick material). Anyone not wearing appropriate shoes will not be allowed to volunteer or in the areas where volunteers are working.
- Earbuds, MP3 players, Bluetooth® or other listening devices are not allowed. Anyone using such will be asked to stop work and turn in tools.
- Minimum age allowed to volunteer is 12 yrs and only when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No one under age 12 is allowed in areas where volunteers are working. No exceptions. Unsupervised children are not allowed on Arboretum grounds or in building.
- No court-ordered or other required community service (school, scouts, etc.) will be allowed without prior consent of Arboretum Director of Volunteers. Contact at least 3 days prior at 713-366-0374.
